Le Mali a inauguré la plus grande mine de lithium d’Afrique, située à Bougouni, à 150 km de Bamako. Ce projet, d’un coût total d’environ 318 millions de dollars (estimé à 640,7 millions selon certaines sources), marque l’entrée du pays sur le marché mondial du lithium, un métal clé pour la fabrication des batteries de véhicules électriques et des technologies vertes.
Avec une capacité annuelle de production de 500 000 tonnes de concentré de spodumène, le site exploité par Lithium du Mali SA, dont l’actionnaire principal est une société chinoise, contient des réserves estimées à 2 millions de tonnes exploitables sur au moins 8,5 ans. Cette production répond à une demande mondiale en pleine expansion et positionne le Mali comme un acteur majeur de l’industrie du lithium en Afrique.
Des entreprises maliennes devraient générer 250 milliards de Francs CFA de chiffre d’affaires grâce au projet, en obtenant au moins 51 % des contrats de sous-traitance, comme l’a indiqué le ministre des Mines, Pr Amadou Kéïta. Par ailleurs, le Mali bénéficiera d’une participation gratuite de 30 % dans ce projet, selon le nouveau code minier adopté en août 2023.
La mine pourrait générer environ 160 millions de dollars par an, consolidant la place du Mali comme leader de la production de lithium en Afrique de l’Ouest.
